Speculations from 2070 to 2079.
In 2070, sea levels reached 4 feet above what it was 2000. Ophelia Woodard announced that the United States, which was 70% reliant on clean energy, needed to be 99% green by 2080. Woodard decreed that if this goal was not met, even more dire consequences would come upon America. In February 2070, President Woodard met with Chinese president Wong Lao and Indian Prime Minister Rajesh Sagathpur. China, which was 60% reliant on clean energy, and India, which was only 45% reliant on clean energy, were the two biggest polluters. Russia was rebuilding it’s power sources from the ground up with clean energy at its core. American President Woodard managed to hammer out an agreement with the Chinese and Indians, both pledged to be 100% green by 2090, a decade after the US goal, giving them time to close the gap.
In June 2070, an American destroyer was sunk by a massive explosion in the Thames Estuary. US president Ophelia Woodard sent US a commission to investigate, and they returned withe results. They said it was a mine, likely placed by English terrorists. President Woodard decided to send warships to restore order to a region that had been in chaos for decades. What they discovered when they got there was highly unexpected. In 2049, Prince George, who had been in exile with his mother in Scotland’s Orkney Islands since 2040. He returned to London that year to reclaim the English throne from chaos. He declared himself King George VII of England, and moved into the damaged and abandoned Buckingham Palace. He married and found loyal supporters to reclaim his country. He was able to seize much of the southeastern corner of England by 2050. Then he began to receive resistance from the chaotic warlords, and a war broke out. King George’s small stretch of territory, called the Kingdom of Thames. King George even began referring to his territory by that name. In 2050, King George and his wife Queen Victoria had a son, Prince Henry. London, which was turning into a swampy forest, was unsuitable for a capital, but King George refused to move it. Through the 2050s, King George pushed the warlords back to Cambridge in the north and Bristol in the west. But in 2058, the Kingdom of Thames was defeated at the Battle of Exeter and at the Battle of Gloucester. King George’s advance was halted. In the 2060s, the Kingdom of Thames was pushed back to the southeast corner of England. Finally, in 2064, King George’s troops were pushed out of London to the cliffs of Dover. They held out there until the Americans arrived in 2070. England had been cut off from most of the world since the 2040s, and had had no electricity. Scotland did, but had no robots and had sealed itself off from England and Wales, the latter of which at least had a stable government.
In July 2070, US president Ophelia Woodard pledged her support to King George VII, in his attempt to restore English government and society before it was too late. The United States army worked with the Thames army to recapture London. By late August of 2070, most of southern England excluding the area west of Exeter was in US-Thames hands. But then the English warlords uncovered the English arsenal. Not the nuclear arsenal, but the normal arsenal of missiles. The warlords used them on the American and Thames troops. The US fought back with missiles, robots, and other new technologies the warlords did not have. An English insurgency formed, and made hit and run attacks on American troops. It was the same type of insurgency as the one America had faced a century earlier in Vietnam. But America fought on. The US also captured the formerly British islands of Jersey and Guernsey off the northern coast of France.
In September 2070, the first presidential and congressional election in Russian history occurred. It pitted Mikhail Koranic against Vladimir Bochek and Nikita Pokcna. Koranic won the election by a landslide, and became the first president of Russia. He continued what he had been doing as dictator, rebuilding Russia’s infrastructure.
In 2071, the Chinese made it too the moon. They set up several small colonies that year. The first and largest (with 60 people) was Kongjian Wan, or Space Bay. The Chinese settlements were primarily built around Aristarchus. The Chinese announced they would make an expedition to Mars the next year. By 2071, there were 14,000 Americans, 700 Germans, and 200 Chinese on Luna (the Moon).
In March 2071, a new state formed in southern Italy. It stretched from Sicily almost all the way to Rome, encompassing much of southern Italy. The capital, Naples, was a burgeoning city of 1.4 million with a metro population of 4.4 million people. The Republic of Calabria and Sicily was doing surprisingly well in a region filled with collapse and destruction. But the success of the new nation would be destroyed in a matter of years by an unstoppable event.
In November 2071, US president Ophelia Woodard ordered a full scale invasion of England. By November the entire country was under US control, but the insurgency only grew.
In January 2072, President Woodard ordered an invasion of northern and eastern France. The area from the Basque border to the Belgian border. The French accepted American conquest, it was better than the stateless chaos they had been living in. In February, President Woodard made the French area captured an official US territory, with its capital at Breast. She also made England a US territory, with the capital at Southampton. King George VII was furious that his throne had been removed, he began working with the insurgents to combat the Americans. President Woodard sent even more troops to England. The Anglo War was in full swing, and the US wasn’t dominating.
In April 2072, a Chinese expedition reached Mars. They set up a settlement on Terra Syrenum. The Chinese settlement, called Xindalu, or New World, began with 70 people. The Chinese sent several more expeditions arrived in the following months to build more settlements. The United States continued building new towns on Luna and Mars.
In 2072, in a small pocket of French society in Orleans, a spaceship had been constructed, It was to ferry this last vestige of French society and culture to colonies on the Moon and Mars. The French had sent an army of robots to Mars in 2052 to build an almost exact replica of a Parisian neighborhood on Mars. The town, “New Paris”, was to be a French colony, but the French state collapsed and the robots returned with their task complete to nothingness. Now, in the old French space port of Orleans, a cluster of Frenchmen prepared to go into space. First, they would stop on the moon and let off 100 of the 400 people squeezed onto the ship. The last 300 journeyed to Mars, to New Paris, which had been uninhabited for 20 years. The French officially established New Paris, and moved into the townhouses. An airtight courtyard between the buildings gave the French colonists a place to relax. This little piece of France survived on Mars. Since the 2040s, France had lost 17 million people to emigration. 10 million French had immigrated to Canada, especially to Quebec. Quebec had been slowly loosing its French flare for decades from immigration and English encroachment. But the 8 million French that immigrated in the 2040s through 2070s turned this around. The French immigrants expanded the Francophone zone out of Quebec, north in Nouveau Quebec, east into New Brunswick and Maine, south in New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York, and west into Ontario, getting as far as Detroit. 5 million French immigrants flooded into the United States, settling in New York, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, and down the Mississippi River to the ruins of New Orleans. Many French immigrants chose the Great Lakes region and the Mississippi River because it had once been French colonial territory in the 1700s. Several areas were transformed by the French immigration. Michigan and Wisconsin became bilingual states, and Louisiana became primarily French speaking.
In November 2072, US president Ophelia Woodard was up for reelection. She was challenged by conservative candidate Arnold Cumberland. Woodard won the election and continued her policies and programs.
In February 2073, a nuclear blast incinerated the city of Tehran, Iran. Iran, which had been a democracy since the 2030s, had been countering Muslim extremists for decades. After the Indus River dried to a trickle in 2047, Pakistan collapsed. Only a thin strip of land along the coast was controlled by the Pakistani government. Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal fell into the hands of anyone who could steal the unguarded nukes first. The American, Indian, and Chinese governments all worked to collect the loose nukes before they fell into the wrong hands. All but 10 of Pakistan’s nukes were recovered. One of them fell into the hands of Sunni terrorists who sought to destroy Shi’ite Iran. Tehran was completely obliterated by the explosion, and hundreds of thousands were killed in the attack. Iran, which was created in its present form in 1979, almost collapsed. The United States, China, India, Turkey, and Egypt sent aid. Iran moved its capital to Shiraz.
In May 2073, the Germans finally made it to Mars. They established several towns around the Tharsis Montes. Nouveau Paris, New Paris, was only a few hundred miles from the German settlements. By 2073, the population of Mars consisted of 12,000 Americans, 4,000 Chinese, 1,000 Germans, and 300 French. The Indians, Turks, Swedes, Nigerians, and Brazilians planned Martian settlement expeditions.
In September 2073, New York City’s and Philadelphia’s storm defense systems were put to the test. Category 4 Hurricane Esmerelda slammed into the New Jersey shore near mostly abandoned Atlantic City. 14 feet of storm surge slammed bowled up the Delaware River and slammed into Philadelphia’s storm barrier. 22 feet of storm surge hit two of New York City’s storm barriers. Both cities’ storm defense systems performed flawlessly. The water did not rise an inch in Upper New York Bay or in Philadelphia.
In January 2074, Canadian Prime Minister Xavier Aspen seceded the Canadian territory of Siberia to Russia. Russia gained thousands of square miles of territory. Russia, which then had a growing population of 119,000, was building new cities in Siberia. Russia was rapidly rising under President Mikhail Koranic, and there was no end in sight for Russia’s growth.
In June 2074, former US president Elizabeth Pearson passed away at 98. She was born in 1976 and was a democrat from North Carolina. She was remembered for he strict environmental policies and for being the first female president during her two terms between 2029 and 2037.
In August 2074, a massive category 5 hurricane, Hurricane Daniel gave Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, a direct hit. Several of the old rusting and destitute apartment and condo towers that had gone up in the Obama boom years collapsed. What was left of the city was wiped out. Before the storm, there were still 800,000 people living along Florida’s Atlantic coastline. After the storm, there were 600,000. Everyone, even up the coast, either evacuated or died. Most evacuated, but 8,000 people were killed between Homestead and Vero Beach. Miami, which before the storm had a population of 30,00 (it had increased in the 2060s), after the storm only 20,000 remained. Now, south Floridians lived on the high ground, or in the old coastal high-rises. Ft. Lauderdale, with 40,000 before the storm, had 25,000 after. Both cities were overgrown and regularly flooded at high tide. President Woodard urged people to leave areas with zone highlighted in the Proclamation of 2063.
In October 2074, a massive earthquake rocked Yellowstone National Park. Yellowstone was a volcano, but not an ordinary volcano. Yellowstone was a super volcano, 5,000 square miles and capable of destroying 3 states and dumping ash across the country. This was common knowledge at the time, and it sent a panic through the American people. Scientists, who had been collecting data on the Yellowstone Volcano for decades, and knew that an eruption in the next few decades was unlikely. But an eruption before the year 3,000 was nearly imminent. President Ophelia Woodard calmed the public saying, “nothing will happen for literally 1,000 years”. Unfortunately she was wrong, but the eruption still wouldn’t come for a long, long time.
In December 2074, US president Ophelia Woodard declared the war in England was over, and that the United States had won. She was mostly correct. The insurgency had been all but destroyed and the US troops were coming home. Still, a small force of insurgents fighting in the ruins of London were still around. Led by former king George IV, the insurgents were based in Buckingham and the Palace of Westminster. The US used Black Operations Forces and the Navy Seals to root out the insurgents after the war.
In February 2075, a major disaster began to unfold in America’s heartland. On February 2, 2075, a massive earthquake rocked New Madrid Missouri. The quake caused severe damage in places as far away as Memphis and St. Louis. The gateway arch in St. Louis survived, as did the Eads Bridge, but many buildings and a bridge collapsed in St. Louis. In Memphis, no major buildings collapsed, but there was widespread destruction. The New Madrid quake was only the beginning, though. Between February and November 2075, three more major earthquakes shook the New Madrid fault, causing widespread destruction. The Mississippi River burst its banks in every quake, flooding hundreds of acres. This was not the first time a disaster of this nature had occurred. In the winter 1811-1812 and spring 1812, a series of massive earthquakes shook the same area. The US president at the time, James Madison, felt the earthquakes in Washington DC. In 2075, US president Ophelia Woodard sent billions of dollars in aid and sent the nation guard to keep things in order. Things calmed down by December 2075, and the rebuilding process began.
In May 2075, Russian president Mikhail Koranic, who had been reelected in September 2074, began a slight rebuilding of the Russian military. The military was virtual nonexistent aside from the several thousand troops of the RRA. Russia was under threat from the same Islamic terrorists that destroyed Tehran, and Russia needed a defensive force. The Russian Army was to be a defensive force.
In November 2075, a bomb exploded in the London underground. The underground, which had been abandoned and had slowly been filling with water since the 2040s, were not severely effected by the explosion. At first, no one knew who had placed the bomb and why it was there, but several American scientists figured it out. They discovered it was a bomb planted by Islamic terrorists in the early 2020s, and had failed to detonate. For more than 50 years, the bomb lay undetected under London, until deterioration finally caused it to explode. No one was killed or injured, and the site soon filled with water.
In January 2076, US president Ophelia Woodard moved her focus from tax reform and environmental issues to another major issue in America. America’s highway system and water systems were falling apart. In the 2010s America had had the same problem, and President Obama and president Ryan had del with it. Now, President Woodard had to deal with it again. America’s roads only lasted 50 years before severely degrading, it had been 60 years since the last major repairs. Bridges and pipes were in jeopardy especially. America’s electric grid had been fortified in the 2030s and 2050s, it was not under threat. Woodard passed a bill through Congress first authorizing highway repair, which would take six years to do, then a water main repair would begin in 2080 and take five years to complete.
On July 4, 2076, the United States celebrated its Tricentennial. It was the 300th anniversary of the United States declaring independence from the British Empire in 1776. Americans across the country celebrated Independence Day. The fireworks displays in New York, Washington, and San Francisco were spectacular, the greatest in American history. President Ophelia Woodard celebrated in Washington.
In August 2076, the population in space was rapidly expanding. There were 4,600 Americans living in 8 space stations orbiting Earth, as well as 18,200 Americans on the Moon and 17,400 on Mars. There were 2,500 Chinese in 6 space stations, 8,400 Chinese on the Moon, and 5,100 on Mars. There were 1,900 Germans in 4 space stations, as well as 3,600 Germans on the Moon and 3,200 on Mars. There were 1,200 Indians on 3 space stations, 2,200 on the Moon, and 700 on Mars. There were 700 Swedes on 1 space station, as well as 1,700 on the Moon and 1,100 on Mars. There were 400 Canadians in 1 space station, as well as 1,200 on the Moon and 900 on Mars. Finally, there were 300 French on the Moon and 700 on Mars (the French survival mission had been and still was traveling between France and the Moon and Mars with the help of the United States. The Irish, Scottish, Finns, Turks, Australians, Japanese, Koreans, and Brazilians were all planning settlement missions.
In November 2076, the US presidential election pitted democratic candidate Michael Chang against conservative candidate Alexandra M. Folsom. Michael Chang won, becoming the first Asian president. He took office in January 2077, and immediately began implementing his promised reforms.
In December 2076, a massive earthquake struck the city of Tokyo, Japan. The city, which had been preparing for a major earthquake since the last one in 1923. Every 70 years and earthquake was supposed to strike, but it had been 150 years since the last one. This earthquake was possibly the largest in the history of Tokyo. It was a 9.5, the second most powerful in history. 100,000 were killed as even skyscrapers keeled over. A massive tsunami slammed into the city, washing away everything along the coast. In the wake of the quake, Tokyo was rebuilt, and Japan recovered with help from other nations. The earthquake did not slow Japan down, it gave the country room to speed up.
In February 2077, US president Michael Chang passed a climate bill through Congress. The bill consisted of three points. Number one, to get America 90% reliant on green energy. Secondly, to complete flood protection system by 2090. Finally, to get China, India, and Nigeria 70% reliant on clean energy. The last point would be the hardest. President Chang met with Nigerian Prime Minister Cornelius Yoruba, Indian Prime Minister Parathi Gupta, and Chinese president Wang Xi. Chang convinced all of them to meet his goal, but the United States would have to give them the advanced green technology. Chang agreed, but told them American companies would have to help them, giving the US economy a boost. The other powers had too agree. You don’t say no to the world’s greatest superpower.
In September 2077, Russian President Mikhail Koranic announced that Russia’s capital of Moscow would be completed in the next year. The old city had been destroyed in 2028 at the end of WWIII by a nuclear explosion. The ruins had been too radioactive to build on, so for 40 years the site had been abandoned save for a joint team of Russian and American scientists. Finally, 40 years of research, the team figured out how to decontaminate the site. Between 2068 and 2070, the ruins of Moscow were decontaminated. There was still some radioactivity in the soil, but not enough to harm humans. In 2070, the building of a “New Moscow” was commenced, and for eight years a new city was raised on the ruins. By 2078, construction on the new downtown would be complete, and Moscow would return to being the nation’s capital.
In January 2078, the insurgency in England was ended by US troops. The insurgency was finally stopped by the killing of King George VII of Thames. This was a big victory for US president Michael Chang. The London insurgency had dogged the American military for four years, and now it had been defeated.
In April 2078, an unlikely nation launched its first space station and a Lunar settlement mission. Which country would make the bold leap into space next? Why, Tanzania of course. Tanzania, a former German then British colony in East Africa, had been on a slow upward curve since the 2020s. By 2078, Tanzania was one of the most advanced countries in Africa. It was a 1st world country with a life expectancy of 88, excellent health and educational facilities, as well as booming capital city of 4 million, Dodoma. Tanzania was the third most powerful country in Africa, after Nigeria and South Africa. Tanzania, with a population of 216 million, was bursting at the seems, and needed an outflow. Immigration to the United States, Canada, and Australia was not going to be enough. The space station, which had a population of 600, and the Lunar settlement missions, which would bring 1,200 Tanzanians to the Moon, gave the country a foothold in space.
In June 2078, a real life Jurassic Park opened on am island of the coast of Costa Rica. The Park was created by CEO Oscar Cornelius, the head of a massive American green energy company. The park held several species of dinosaurs, which had been cloned from fossilized DNA and birthed by reptiles. Among them was the legendary Tyrannosaurus Rex, or T-Rex. The dinosaur cloning project had been spearheaded by scientists from Columbia University in New York City and funded by wealthy investors like Oscar Cornelius. The project was begun in 2058, and Jurassic Park itself had been under construction since 2074. The first dinosaur was cloned in 2074. This amazing scientific breakthrough was one of the most exciting and important in western history.
In July 2078, the United States was the greatest nation on Earth, and for the first time in history, elsewhere. The United States still had 50 states, but the number of territories had skyrocketed. The major US territories on Earth where: Taiwan, Puerto Rico, England, coastal northern and eastern France, Iraq and Syria, and eastern Siberia. In space, there were no definite territorial borders, not on the Moon or on Mars, but settlements were clustered in general regions. Still, the United States was the most powerful nation in world history, but not the largest territorial country in history. The British Empire of 1922 was the largest nation in world history, covering 1/4 of the Earth. Still, the United States was close, and had a much larger GDP and military.
In August 2078, Russian President Mikhail Koranic announced Moscow was complete. He moved into the Presidential Palace that month, although he had only a month left in office. In September 2078, the Russian people elected Nikita Rechnokov president. President Rechnokov continued many of President Koranic’s policies. Russia was on the rise, that year it became the world’s 15th greatest power. Russia was poised to become a superpower once again.
In October 2078, President Chang met with the leaders of the other powers in space to discuss territorial integrity. They started drawing lines on a maps of the Moon and Mars. They carved up space, drawing broad borders around their settlements. The Moon and Mars were drawing even more settlers. There were 32,600 people on the Moon and 29,800 on Mars, as well as 12,200 people on space stations. The total number of off-Earth humans was 74,600, the size of a large town or small city. Still, the population was rising rapidly as more and more countries launched space colonization missions. Some of the unlikely countries preparing missions were Ireland, Norway, Peru, Thailand, Cameroon, Angola, and Mozambique.
By January 2079, the balance of the world had changed. The global “core”, the collection of first word nations, was far from where it was in the year 2000. In 2000, the global core was the nations of the European Union, western and northern Europe, the United States, Canada, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, and Australia. In the year 2079, the global core was the every country in the Americas, including the Caribbean, and East Asia, the Philippines, Southeast Asia, the East Indies, New Zealand, Australia, Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal, Tanzania, Kenya, South Africa, Mozambique, Madagascar, Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Dem. Rep. Congo, Congo, and Angola. The periphery, or third world, now consisted still of much of subsaharan Africa, almost the entire Islamic world, from Morocco to Pakistan, and all of Europe. Several states in Europe had completely collapsed, and most of Europe had no electricity. Only the countries of Scandinavia, the Baltic States, Russia, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Germany, Denmark, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Iceland, and the Republic of South Italy (from just south of Rome to Sicily) had electricity. Between 2050 and 2080, millions of Europeans had fled to the semi-periphery of North Africa. Christian European settlements popped up in predominantly Muslim North Africa. This caused friction with the native Muslim population. The same problem in Europe of nearly a century in the past had reversed itself. In the early 21st Century, millions of Muslims seeking a better life left North Africa and the Middle East for western Europe. Mid-century, the flows reversed as Europe went into a tailspin. By 2079, Europe had less than 10,000 Muslims, while the Christian population in North Africa and the Middle East rose. In 2079, the Christian population in Algeria was 9% of the population, in Morocco even higher at 12%. The immigrant populations of north African countries depended primarily on which country was directly north of it. So, for Morocco, Spain was the main source, for Algeria it was France, for Tunisia and Libya it was Italy, for Egypt (the oddball) it was England, and in Asia Minor, the sources for Turkey was Greece and Bulgaria.
On June 4, 2079, a large earthquake struck the city of Naples, capital of South Italy. The earthquake didn’t do a tremendous amount of damage, but it did wreak havoc in the poorly constructed eastern suburbs of Naples. The earthquake was not a major event in itself, but it was a omen of what was to come.
On July 16, 2079, at around 9AM, a massive explosion ripped through Naples. The residents of the city knew immediately what was going on. It was not an Islamic terrorist attack or another nuclear war. Mt. Vesuvius had erupted, and all 4.4 million people living around the volcano were in grave danger. The South Italian government began a massive evacuation of the entire population of the city. A massive ash cloud expanded over the city, rocks and ash fell on the city. People evacuated by any available option. Most drove, but some took the train to the firs stop outside of the danger zone. Day turned into night as the ash blotted out the sun. The rocks and ash began to pile up like snow, and streets became impassable. Several cruise ships escaped the port, but others were bogged down by ash or hit by lava bombs. Many residents fled by taking boats out of the harbor, and even a cargo ship made it out late in the eruption. As night fell, the ash was already three feet deep in the streets of Naples. Cars were no longer useful for escape, only boats and trains could provide a way out of the city. By midnight on the 16th, 3.6 million of the 4.4 million residents of the area had managed to escape. By early morning on the 17th, the railroad had become impassible and the roof of the Naples Grand Terminal was crumbling. Across the region, roofs were collapsing, killing thousands who were still in their homes. Many people gathered in Naples’s Catholic churches, thinking the roofs were strong enough, and with a little divine intervention, they would survive. By dawn (although know one knew it), the ash was seven feet deep, and deeper in the city streets. The ruins of Pompeii, an ancient Roman city to the south of the volcano that had been destroyed by the same type of disaster exactly 2000 years before, were reburied. In the morning of June 17, many Neapolitans fled to the upper floors of skyscrapers to escape the final phase of the eruption. By then, 300,000 people remained in the city, and their options had run out. Several hundred hid in medieval forts in the western part of the city, while others took small boats into and out of the harbor. At around noontime on June 17th, the final phase of the eruption began. The massive cloud billowing out of Mt. Vesuvius collapsed and raced down the sides of the mountain as a pyroclastic flow. The ruins of Pompeii were buried first, then Naples was hit. The pyroclastic flow raced across the Bay of Naples, killing hundreds fleeing on boats. The burning cloud of gas raced over Naples, incinerating everything that would burn. Only those who had hidden underground (on the buried 1st floors and basements of buildings), or high up (on the upper floors of skyscrapers) survived. Many who had taken refuge in churches were killed as the pyroclastic flow collapsed roofs and toppled steeples. There were a few churches that were buried but not destroyed, and those who took shelter in those churches survived. The two medieval forts in Naples, one near the water and the other on high ground, were not destroyed but damaged. The Neapolitans who took refuge there almost all survived. But 257,000 people were killed in the eruption. After the ash settled, 257,000 laid dead and 4.4 million left homeless. The entire city was completely destroyed. 20 feet of ash laid on top of the city. Few returned to the black desert that became known as the Nero Plain del Vesuvio, or the Black Plain of Vesuvius. The disaster destroyed the state of South Italy, the country collapsed within a year.
In October 2079, US president Michael Chang became the first president to journey to the Moon. He visited the American settlements, and met with the territorial governor in Luna City. He was not the first president in space, though. President Daniel Calverton had visited a US space station in 2058. Every president after him did likewise.
In December 2079, a incredible new invention that had been anticipated for over a century had finally been created. The flying car was a revolutionary invention, with the use of many very fast spinning fans to lift the vehicle off the ground. The company that created the flying car was a new company based in Detroit, the invention had thrust the company, Aeroauto, into the spotlight. The cars were extremely expensive, and only a few hundred billionaires and millionaires could afford them. Still, they were a huge hit.
