Speculations for 2120 to 2129.
In January 2120, the power grid everywhere west of the Mississippi went down. Only Minneapolis, Minnesota, Davenport, Iowa, St. Louis, Missouri, West Memphis, Arkansas, and New Toulouse, Louisiana had power. Technicians worked to get the grid back online, but only succeeded in providing spotty coverage to Des Moines, Omaha, Little Rock, Dallas, and Shreveport. President Paterson vowed to restore power to every part of the United States, but the goal was too lofty to achieve.
By April 2120, hundreds of cities had been abandoned because of sea level rise. New Orleans, Tampa, Miami, Jacksonville, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Bremen, Venice, Bangkok, Male, Dhaka, Ho Chi Minh City, Banjul, and hundreds of smaller towns and cities had been lost to the see. Sea level rise was not the only threat. Las Vegas, Riyadh, Kabul, Timbuktu, Reno, and Ashgabat had been abandoned because of encroaching deserts. There was a third cause for the abandonment: obliteration. Santiago, Kiev, Minsk, Fresno, Indianapolis, Vilnius, Tehran, Islamabad, Delhi, Hyderabad, Ankara, and Moscow. All of these cities were destroyed by warfare or severe natural disasters.
In July 2120, US president Augustus Paterson was assassinated during a speech on the steps of the capitol in a coup de’etat. The coup was initiated by Thomas Linn, a former Kentucky governor. Linn and his followers took control of the US government and Linn became dictator of the United States. Linn met opposition from every member of Congress and 99.9% of Americans. Linn moved into the White House and surrounded himself, the building, and the city with loyal US troops. They barricaded themselves inside the city and only allowed limited travel in and out. All of East Asia, Russia, Australia, and Canada announced they were all in strong opposition to Linn’s takeover.
In November 2120, for the first time since 1792, no presidential elections were held on a leap year in the United States. Thanks to dictator Thomas Linn, the United States was no longer a democracy at the federal level. Linn permitted lower level democratic elections like state governor elections and senate elections.
In January 2121, Japan made an shocking announcement. The country had seen a declining population during the first three quarters of the 21st Century. The void had been filled by robots, who took the jobs that were unfilled by the decline. By the early 22nd Century, the Japanese population had begun to rebound, but robots had become an integral part of life. In 2121, Japan announced it viewed advanced robots as life, and began the process of giving them rights. This unprecedented move was not repeated anywhere else in the world, and was even viewed negatively by Americans. By 2121, only 5% of Americans owned robots, down from the high of 45% in 2105. Many older robots had been decommissioned and new ones were not made.
In March 2121, Canada closed its southern border. An influx of immigrants from the United States had been pouring over the border since the hostile takeover of dictator Thomas Linn. Illegal immigration from the United States into Canada spiked, and the virtually nonexistent Canadian border patrol was stretched to the breaking point. The majority of the immigrants settled within 50 miles of the border, but some trekked far north. The Canadian provinces of Quebec and Nunavut attempted to stem the flow, Quebec because of the English speaking immigrants, and Nunavut to preserve the Eskimo culture. A stream of white and black Americans invaded Nunavut, and many were discriminated against by the 80% majority Native Americans.
In June 2121, US dictator Thomas Linn declared martial law after protests against his government erupted into violence. He imposed a 9PM to 6AM curfew and stationed large numbers of US troops in big cities like New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Boston, Columbus, St. Louis, Chicago, Houston, Memphis, Detroit, Minneapolis, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Charlotte, Charleston, Cleveland, and many other cities. Locals fought back, but were injured or killed.
By July 2121, Russia was one of the world’s most powerful nations. It had become a food superpower in the 2070s as climate change opened up vast tracts of arable land in Siberia. Russia and Canada were the two great powers of the Borealis. Alaska, Kalaallit Nunaat, Iceland, and a reemerging Norway were all benefitting. Shipping was growing in the Arctic Ocean and Northwest Passage, making the North Pole, which was ice free May-October, attractive for shipping and mining. Many settlements were popping up on the Siberian and Canadian Arctic coasts. Canada’s Ellesmere Island and Russia’s Novaya Zemlya were brimming with activity. Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland) was seeing massive growth as well. In Antartica, the colonies of nations like Argentina, Chile, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Norway, and even a French speaking independent state existed on the continent.
In August 2121, after the murder of protesters in Cleveland by US troops, the American people revolted. Across the country they took up arms against their brutal government. First the outer states, the periphery of the union, revolted. Idaho, Montana, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas were the first to be freed from Us control. Soon, every state west of the Mississippi had been freed. Freedom fighters in Massachusetts, Michigan, Georgia, New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and every other eastern state would need to fight harder for their freedom. By October 2121, Only northern Virginia and central Maryland were under US control. The country that was once the world’s greatest superpower was now limited to the metro area of its capital. The resistance to the government had transformed into a hate of the United States, and a love of “America”. Social Media played a roll, but the country’s failing infrastructure slowed the spread of ideas such as that. For all intents and purposes, New York, Chicago, Nashville, Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Omaha, St. Louis, Detroit, Memphis, Philadelphia, Charlotte, and every other city besides Washington, Alexandria, and Arlington were no longer within the jurisdiction or borders of the United States. By early October, only the District of Columbia remained in US hands. At dawn on October 6, 2121, the final assault by the freedom fighters began. Washington fell to the “Americans” by daw the next day, and dictator Thomas Linn was captured in the final battle at the White House. On the morning of October 7, Linn was tried by a court of the freedom fighters in Senate chamber of the US capitol. He was found guilty of treason, murder, and tyranny. He was marched out to the front of the capitol to a waiting gallows. After the singing of the American national anthem by a local Washingtonian, Thomas Linn was hanged. The leader of the freedom fighters, “General” Edward Heintze, declared the United States of America was dead. The US was no more. That month the entire electric grid went down and the entire former country was plunged into darkness. The freedom fighters, now with no common objective, began quarreling amongst each other until they went their separate ways. Any new states founded immediately after the Great Collapse failed, and major cities like New York and Chicago were virtually abandoned as chaos reigned. America was plunged into the dark ages.
In December 2121, former US presidet Xavier Owens passed away at 101. He was born in 2020 and was a conservative from Pennsylvania. During his term and a half between 2087 and 2093, President Owens saw defeat in the Fourth World War.
In February 2122, China sent the first antimatter powered space ship on a manned mission to the Moons of Jupiter. Antimatter spacecraft had been under development since the late 2060s, with the first prototype constructed in 2068. The vessel would hold 8 Chinese astronauts and it would take 4 months to reach the solar system’s largest planet.
In April 2122, Canadian Prime Minister Cornelia Ennis ordered Canadian troops to seize the northern 2/3 of the former US state of Maine. It became the Canadian territory of Arcadia. The people of northern Maine had no say, but didn't particularly mind the invasion; it restored basic services including electricity.
In June 2122, a collaboration between the East Asian nations bore fruit. Plans for a space elevator to be built on the east coast of the Indonesian island of Borneo, along the equator. It would be 47km tall, many times longer than the Earth was wide. Construction would take 15 years and it would be constructed using nanobots, tiny microscopic robots that did most of the world’s construction. Construction would begin that year and it would be completed in 2137. The project was funded by China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, and India.
In August 2122, Miami became a pirate colony. Atlantis-Nassau was the capital of Atlantic-Caribbean piracy, and with the limited federal aid flowing into Florida now gone, the sea ravaged peninsula was ripe for the picking. That year, pirates set up shop in the ruins of Miami. The few remaining residents helped the pirates for a share of their prophets. Miami’s population doubled within the year from 3,600 to 7,200 from the influx of pirates.
In October 2122, sea levels reached 9 feet above 2000 levels. This rise put large parts of the Gulf Coast permanently underwater, and turned Miami into a series of ruble strewn islands.
By December 2122, major scale arcologies were practical, and construction of the first, in Shanghai, China, would commence the next year. Similar to Tokyo’s massive harbor pyramid built in the 2070s and 2080s, but much larger. The Shanghai structure, named the Great Shanghai Arcology. Similar structures were planned for cities across China, Korea, and Japan. India and Indonesia would soon get in on the arcology boom.
In March 2123, construction on the first space elevator began. It would extended from the equator outwards, ultimately reaching 47km above the Earth. It would be constructed with nanobots. The elevator would be built towards Earth from space to save time. The base of the elevator would be located on the equator on the east coast of Borneo just south of the Indonesian city of Bontang. The venture would take 15 years, but once operational it would make space flight much more cost effective.
By June 2123, East Asian space probes were incredible advanced. Controlled almost completely controlled by AI, like most of life. They were sent across the Galaxy, primarily to Alpha Centauri. They first probe had reached the star system in 2112, and a new probe had reached the system that year. It investigated an Earth like planet in the system, and what the probe discovered was shocking. The planet had life. Not intelligent life, but dinosaur like animals roaming tropical jungles and dry deserts. This discovery brought a whole new perspective to humans, and many of the East Asian philosophers pondered its meaning.
In September 2123, Haiti collapsed. Haiti, which had gone from being the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere in 2010 to one of the richest in 2060. Haiti had accomplished this transition from investing in its own clean energy companies and creating new economic and government programs. The country lifted itself out of poverty, but by the 2070s, it relied heavily on US imports. With the collapse of the United States in 2121, Haiti had to rely on the other nations of the Caribbean, which were all past their peaks in the mid 21st Century and were all declining. Haiti’s collapse would be one of many in the coming years as the Caribbean and eventually all of the Americas would go the way of the United States.
In November 2023, a group of pirates led by Willis Othero of Savannah stole the USS Alabama from Mobile harbor. Mobile, which was hanging by a thread after a century of sea level rise and multiple pirate raids, was defended only by a militia based on the Alabama. With their only defense gone Mobile was doomed. Willis Othero made the Alabama his flag ship. The USS Alabama, a nearly 200 year old battleship from WWII, was in need of some modifications. Othero dry-docked his ship at his HQ in the ruins of Tampa. After a few months of repairs and a few upgrades, Captain Othero set sail on a path of destruction.
In January 2124, a group of New Yorkers decided to take back their city from chaos. New York City, like all American cities after the collapse, had been filled with crime and was very chaotic. Finally, after 2 years, many New Yorkers said enough was enough. They established a camp on Governor’s Island, where they stockpiled supplies and weapons. The New York Militia first retook Battery Park at the southern tip of Manhattan. They set up a base camp. They slowly worked their way northward on Manhattan Island, reaching City Hall by late January, and Houston street by mid-February. By early March, they had reached 14th Street, and in mid-March they were at 23rd Street. This process continued for months, they took 34th Street by late March and 42nd Street by early April. They reached 59th Street by mid-April and 72nd Street by late April. In early May, they had reached 96th Street, and had reached the bottom of Harlem at 110th street by mid-May. By early June, all of Manhattan Island was under the control of the NYM. They captured Brooklyn and Queens in June and the Bronx, Staten Island, and Hudson County, formerly New Jersey. New Yorkers celebrated the 500th anniversary of the founding of their city in a united and more or less orderly New York. In July of 2124, the Democratic Republic of New York was founded. It constituted of all five boroughs of the city, plus Hudson County, New Jersey. The leader of the NYM, Patrick O’Neill, was elected the first president of New York that year. New Yorkers were able to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the founding of their city. New York still had no electricity, but President O’Neill led the rebuilding effort. In the years following the establishment of “New York”, other small republics would pop up in the old American cities.
In April 2124, legendary pirate Willis Othero sailed up the old American east coast in his flagship (leading two others), pillaging cities. First, Savannah, Othero’s old hometown, was ransacked, then Charleston, then Wilmington, then the old US navy HQ at Norfolk. Stateless sailors still holed up in Norfolk kept the pirates out of the Chesapeake Bay, and Othero was forced to return to Tampa. He vowed to return.
In July 2124, Ireland regained electricity. The country had been dark since the 2060s, and had been sent back to the middle ages. The country had slowly been working its way “back to the future”. In the 2120s, Ireland had returned to the technology of the 1880s+cars. The Irish decided not to disclose their rebuilding to other European nations, for they feared attack.
In October 2124, the first Great African War ended. The nations led by Tanzania had won. They did not gain very much territory, but did get a large sum of money. The war had killed 40 million, and neither side wanted to repeat it. Each nation made a pact not to fight each other unless attacked, and formed a supranational organization to prevent future conflicts.
In March 2125, China advanced its space exploration program, planning a manned mission to the Saturnian system that would reach its destination the following year. Two months later, Japan announced a manned mission to Mercury.
In July 2125, a civil war broke out in Mexico. The country, which had gone from a third world to first world nation between 2000 and 2050, had gone into a decline in the 2110s, and was hard hit economically by the collapse of the United States. Not two or three, but four warring factions vied for control of the country, operating regionally. The Azatlanis in the northern states, the Yucatanis in the southeast, the Federales in the east and middle, and the Kinnares in the west and south. Most of the battles occurred in and around Mexico city and along the borders of the “revolutionares”. The other Latin American powers, which were also beginning to slope into decline, declined to intervene militarily, instead they offered aid the victims of the conflict.
In November 2125, a Chinese sponsored dictator in the Kingdom of Crimea was overthrown as a revolution broke out. This went against Chinese interests, the dictator had promised to keep the monopoly of Chinese companies on the country’s energy companies. This disruption threatened Chinese interests, and like the United States in Iraq over a century before, Chinese president Linping Hu ordered military action. Chinese troops took over the country in weeks, and stabilized the situation. They occupied the country for months before the revolutionaries began an insurgency against the Chinese. Crimea became China’s Iraq.
In April 2126, the Republic of Chicago was established in the heart of the city. Its founder, William DuPage, became its first president. Unlike the Democratic Republic of New York, which expanded to its original size then stopped and secured its borders, the Republic of Chicago began a rapid campaign of expansion. It radiated out from the old downtown into the surrounding neighborhoods, into the suburbs, and all the way out into the surrounding forest and exurbs. The expansion was gradually slowed by a combination of distance, attacks by bandits, and weather.
In July 2126, a massive hurricane slammed into south Florida. Hurricane Justin swept over Miami and submerged the remnants of the city under 32 feet of storm surge. This rare early season category 5 storm only succeeded on killing a few resident pirates, sinking a few pirate vessels, and knocking over some ruined buildings. The storm washed away the last remnants of a great American city, leaving only the den of pirates that had grown around it. This city of pirates, however, would develop its own culture and society, and in the latter half of the century once again be a seat of political power.
In October 2126, Ireland sent an exploratory mission to find out what happened to America. They had received no communication for five years from the US, and had received limited and brief information from Canadian authorities. Irish president Seamus McDonagh ordered an expedition to the American east coast. The expedition, with only rudimentary navigational equipment, landed on the east coast of Canada near Halifax, where they made port. After leaving Nova Scotia, the triage of ships followed the coast from Maine to North Carolina before returning to Ireland with their report.
In January 2127, Russia’s population reached 250,000. The country had been steadily growing. Its population, economy, and overall status had all been rising since the Russian Republic’s creation in 2070. Since the mid 21st Century, vast tracts of land in Siberia had been opening up as the permafrost melted and tree line encroached on the tundra. By 2127, 3 out of Russia’s top ten cities were located in Siberia, all of which had populations over 750,000. New cities were springing up along the Arctic coast and in the heart of Siberia. Clean energy, mostly in the form of wind and hydropower, was exploited to the full. Russia was the world’s 8th most powerful nation, and it was closing in on #7.
In June 2127, the Democratic State of Boston was established. It quickly expanded out from downtown Boston, into the surrounding counties. After capturing a sizable chunk of the Boston metro area, radiating out in a circle around the city, the Bostonians stopped their advance and secured their borders. Boston, instead of being a republic of democratic republic, was a democratic state, with no single leader. Instead, the people voted on all laws and major decisions. Boston was one of many small republics popping up in the ruins of America.
In December 2127, a massive earthquake rocked China’s Fujian province. 300 people were killed in landslides and the tsunami that followed. Several coastal towns were completely destroyed. The Chinese government sent aid, and the province was restored after a few years.
In February 2128, Ireland sent a colonization expedition to the North American coast. The plan was to capture New England and make it an Irish colony. Although the region was predominantly Irish ethnically, by the 22nd Century most held their current American homeland in a higher regard than their ancestral homeland. When the Irish expedition reached Boston, they found a new nation. Instead of trying to conquer the Democratic state of Boston, the Irish decided to set up a colony in the populated wild lands in northern New England. They set up their first settlement near Camden, Maine, and named it New Galway. They claimed the former state of Maine for Ireland, and began establishing towns, as well as seizing existing ones. They named their colony “New Ireland”, an interesting juxtaposition to “New England” and the nearby Canadian province Nova Scotia, Latin for New Scotland.
In July 2128, an earthquake rocked San Francisco. Most of the city’s newer Chinese structures survived unscathed, but many of the older American buildings were damaged or destroyed. Most of the buildings destroyed were low to medium-rise structures. With those buildings gone, the city could took on a truly Chinese flare, with pagodas and other Chinese stiles replacing the old western city.
In October 2128, the Democratic Republic of Philadelphia was established. Its president, Thomas Williams, ordered a slow, moderate rate of expansion away from the city center, as to consolidate what they had gained. Philadelphia began limited overland trade with New York, and Philadelphian traders got as far north as Boston and New Ireland (Maine).
In January 2129, a Japanese cruise ship sank off the coast of Alaska. The NS Kyoto Norama, Japan’s largest cruise ship, struck an iceberg off the central Aleutian Islands. 20 people died out of 7,400. Alaskan and Japanese inquiries into the disaster led to the conclusion that the sinking was inevitable.
In April 2129, a new nation formed on the eastern end of Long Island, in what was New York State. The Peconic Republic was the first country in the former United States not be established in a major city. It was not very large, but its existence was still an accomplishment.
In August 2129, a human settlement was founded on Europa, one of the moons of Jupiter. The Chinese settlement began with a population of 70, but it quickly grew. By 2129, there were 107,000 people living in space stations orbiting Earth. There were 211,000 people living on Luna and 208,000 on Mars.
In November 2129, the Mexican civil war came to its bloody conclusion. The Federales defeated the Kinares, Yucatanis, and Azatlanis, and taken control of the country. This change of power did not stop Mexico’s decline.
